Merton Cricket Club

1 Feb 2024

Good Evening, Mertonians! With the official club nets beginning yesterday, alongside the nets partaken at Clapham Common and The Cricket For Change Centre, there could well be a few aching limbs trooping to work in the morning...but it's worth it to be back at the cricket! Below is an update regarding the AGM, Winter Nets and our Junior Cricket section - so read on!

AGM Update

The 2024 AGM is now just one week away, and with quite a few changes happening to Committee it looks to be our most important AGM for some years. We have had a great response from members regarding the upcoming 2024 Annual General Meeting, with more people putting their names forward for Committee roles.

Winter Nets Update

Demand has outstripped supply! After only a couple of weeks, we have extended our booking at Wimbledon College Sports Hall to 9am-12am. Today's session was split into two 90-minute sessions, and the organisers will gather feedback on whether that format continues or a switch to three one-hour sessions would be preferred.

Booking a place is still done via Spond, and you also have the chance to join a waiting list if spots are booked quickly - and they are! Unfortunately, due to booking restraints, we aren't able to run the sessions for longer. Booking is still on a first come, first served basis, and so non-members have an equal chance alongside 2023 members to grab a spot.

2023 members train for free; all others will pay £5 per session or £3 for under 16’s. James Prebble is accepting payments from non-members - he will communicate his details to those who need them in due course. Please arrive from 8:50am to help with setting up. There is ample car parking for drivers, and the 200 bus drops off very near Edge Hill for those using public transport.

Wimbledon College have asked us to remind all users that smoking or vaping is not allowed anywhere on the premises.

Junior Cricket Section Update

Our first-ever junior softball teams have learned who they will be sharing a Surrey Junior Cricket Championship division with for our debut season! Our Under 8's team, the Foxes, will be playing teams from Wimbledon, AJ Coaching Academy, East Molesey, Malden Wanderers, Old Ruts, Roehampton and Teddington, and their league campaign with begin on May 4th.

The Under 9's, The Falcons, begin a fortnight later as they are in a smaller division, and will be playing Alleyn, Malden Wanderers, Thames Ditton, Spencer and Roehampton - and both teams will also play some friendly games during the summer as well.

They are going to train from 10am-11am on Sundays during April before the switch to Saturday mornings, when all League matches will be played. All home games will be played at John Innes Rec away from the square, and will be done and dusted long before preparations for League matches on those days will commence.

We have tailored the offer to factor out the indoor sessions, which are no longer running. Just £50 is the cost to join the Junior section, which pays for full junior membership, a personalised match shirt and club cap. We are looking to recruit players for both teams, from juniors currently in Years 2, 3 and 4 at school (7 to 9 years old in 2024).

If you know of anyone who would be interested in their youngsters signing up for a full summer of cricket at our great club, and helping to launch our Junior section, give them our details and urge them to get in touch!

All Stars 2024

Our third year of Friday evening fun cricket sessions for 5 to 8 year-olds will begin on May 17th 2024 at 6pm. There will once again be ice lollies and the sprinkler turned on when the weather is hot, as well as an hour of drills and skills designed to get youngsters of all abilities having a great time playing a great sport. Once again the cost for all nine weeks will be just £40, and new signees to the ECB All Stars page receive their free backpack, cricket kit, cap and named shirt. Booking for this goes live towards the end of February; if you or someone you know is interested in a summer of cricket for their young uns, tell them to email mertoncricketallstars@gmail.com and be put on the emailing list!
